CASE STUDY

Vinidex is a leading Australian manufacturer and supplier of pipeline systems, working with PVC, polyethylene (PC), polypropylene (PP) and metal pipe and fitting systems. With the majority of Vinidex’s plastic manufacturing waste formerly going to landfill, when REMONDIS came on board the challenge was clear: improve recycling rates without disrupting business operations.

By carefully auditing waste materials, taking the time to understand site operations, and then collaborating with specialist recycling partners, REMONDIS delivered a waste management plan that met Vinidex’s goals without compromising the way things were run onsite.

Jan to Jun 2024

  • 81.6% to landfill (40 tonnes per month)
  • 18.4% recycled (9 tonnes per month)
  • Total tonnage: 49 tonnes per month

Jul to Dec 2024

  • 23.7% to landfill (9 tonnes per month)
  • 76.3% recycled (29 tonnes per month)
  • Total tonnage: 38 tonnes per month

Environmental outcomes

Approximately 608.36m3 (152.09 tonnes) diverted from landfill, which has saved approximately 197.72 tonnes of CO2 emissions

The challenge

The primary challenge for Vinidex’s manufacturing facility at Smithfield, NSW, was the disposal of plastic waste arising from the manufacturing of PVC, PC and PP pipes. Prior to REMONDIS commencing in June 2024, the majority of waste was going directly to landfill; on average, around 40 tonnes per month. Vinidex – and parent company Aliaxis – identified this as a major concern and set their sights on significantly improving all recycling rates and waste diversion from landfill.

The REMONDIS solution

REMONDIS’s dedicated Project Manager and team undertook a comprehensive waste audit at Vinidex’s Smithfield facility to identify all outputs from the manufacturing process and site operations. The team gained an understanding of how the site operated and the rationale for current practices, and then were able to identify changes which could be made without affecting operations.

Once waste products were identified as recyclable, potential recovery options were then discussed. This included engaging specialist vendors – drawing on REMONDIS’s extensive partner network – to attend site to provide feedback on what can and can’t be viably recycled.

Having identified all recyclable materials and introduced new services into Vinidex’s waste management plan, training programs educated employees on what materials can be disposed together, and how recyclables can be stored.

Importantly, Vinidex identified a ‘Waste Champion’ from among their staff, who became the main contact to assist with any changes, and to positively champion change.

The result

With the implementation of new initiatives across the site, Vinidex has significantly reduced the waste going to landfill.
Going forward, real-time operational and environmental data, available 24/7 online from REMONDIS’s industry-leading Client Portal, provides the transparency Vinidex needs to progress its zero waste to landfill target.
As the waste industry is changing all the time, REMONDIS IMS will not only monitor that existing waste management services remain beneficial for Vinidex but also continue to look for new ways to support this client as new resource recovery infrastructure, technology and services arise.
