What do you need to know about general waste?

While we’re passionate about reducing waste in landfill, we know it isn’t always possible or commercially viable to recycle all waste. General waste is made up of those materials that can’t practically or technically be recycled.

General waste can be putrescible (containing organic matter which can break down) or non-putrescible (waste that doesn’t break down easily) – you might come across these terms on your waste service invoice.

ACCEPTABLE general waste

Ideally, your general waste bin contains those materials that can’t practically or technically be recycled.

In a general waste bin, the following types of waste are typically accepted:

  • Non-recyclable packaging
  • Food-contaminated packaging
  • Office waste
  • Broken glass and ceramics
  • Disposable items
  • Waxed products
  • Strapping and packing materials
  • Damaged household items
  • Light bulbs and e-waste

Please note that these guidelines may vary depending on disposal site practices, and state government legislation and regulation.

Non-recyclable packaging

Materials such as plastic film, plastic bags, and certain types of plastic containers

Food-contaminated packaging

Items like used pizza boxes, greasy paper plates, and coffee cups

Broken glass and ceramics

Small amounts of broken glass, ceramics, or pottery that cannot be recycled

Disposable Items

Gloves, tissues, and paper towels

Office waste

Non-recyclable stationery, broken pens, and laminated paper

Waxed products

Waxed cardboard or waxed paper items

Strapping and packing materials

Strapping ties and packing materials

Damaged household items

Broken or damaged items that cannot be recycled, such as plastic utensils and containers

Light bulbs and e-waste

Light bulbs and small electronic waste items

ACCEPTABLE, alternative solutions available

Ideally, your general waste bin contains those materials that can’t practically or technically be recycled.

In a general waste bin, the following types of waste are typically accepted but additional dedicated recycling and resource recovery services are available. By adding a selection of recycling services to your waste management plan you can reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, reduce the impact of Landfill Levies on your business, and potentially save on your total waste management bill.

  • Cardboard and paper
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Plastics
  • Electronic waste (e-waste)
  • Metal cans and scraps

Cardboard and paper

Clean and uncontaminated paper and cardboard can be placed in general waste bins, but it is better to recycle them using dedicated Paper and Cardboard recycling services

Glass bottles and jars

While they can go into general waste bins, it's more environmentally friendly to use a dedicated Glass recycling service, which ensures this valuable recyclable resource is given an opportunity to be recycled and reused

Plastics

Some plastic materials can be placed in general waste bins, but using a dedicated Plastic recycling service ensures that recyclable plastics are appropriately processed and reused

Electronic waste (e-waste)

Small electronic waste items may be disposed of in general waste bins, but a specialised E-waste collection service ensures proper recycling and disposal, reducing the environmental impact of e-waste and ensuring valuable recyclable resources are recovered for reuse

Metal cans and scraps

Metal cans and small metal scraps can be placed in general waste bins, but it's better to use a dedicated Metal recycling service to recycle and reuse these materials effectively, returning the valuable recyclable materials to the circular economy

What happens to general waste?

After general waste is collected, it’s usually taken to a transfer station to be consolidated into efficient volumes for transport.

A resource recovery line may be the next step, where picking lines remove any larger pieces of recyclable material such as cardboard, metal or wood. Residual waste may then be compacted, packed into specialised trucks and transferred to a landfill facility for disposal.

However, most general waste is destined for landfill.

Across the globe, REMONDIS always working to reduce the volume of waste going to landfill. Here in Australia, we operate Refuse Derived Fuel plants (which turn non-recyclable waste into fuel pellets for industry) and we’re working on several Energy from Waste facility proposals, in which non-recyclable waste is converted into electricity.
