REMONDIS is your trusted partner in the safe, sensitive and compliant collection and disposal of medical, clinical and sanitary wastes. Dive deeper into our operations, with these FAQs.
Clinical waste is characterised by its potential to pose risks of harm or disease.
Examples include waste generated in isolation rooms (such as parvovirus), pathology and laboratory waste, materials contaminated with blood and bodily fluids, blood-related products, syringes, full sharp containers, intravenous drips, drains, catheters, and disposable gowns or drapes.
All these are materials that pose significant health, safety or environmental risks when disposed of improperly and so require specific reporting and transport requirements for compliant disposal. Medical waste streams typically can’t be sent straight to conventional landfill; these include substances defined under the Australian Code for the Transport of Dangerous Goods. These waste streams must be pre-treated to a level that satisfies the Waste Classification Guidelines. Each material must be assessed in order to be collected, processed and disposed of properly, in accordance with relevant regulations.
Common medical waste types include:
Animal anatomical services are the disposal – via burial or cremation – of animals after death. We can provide this service for small and large animals, with options for group burial and group cremation.
Cytotoxic waste is waste and materials that are contaminated by the use of cytotoxic drugs during treatment.
Bin sizes available are 120 litre, 240 litre.
Pharmaceutical waste includes out of date or surrendered prescription drugs and medications.
Bin sizes available are 8 litre, 14 litre, 120 litre.
Confidential waste is confidential or sensitive information, such as patient records, which must be securely destroyed.
Bin sizes available: 240 litre.
REMONDIS provides hygiene bin services for female toilets. Dedicated bins are provided and swapped out on an agreed schedule, for hygienic disposal of sanitary pads and tampons.
Secure plastic bins in several sizes, for blades, needles and other sharps.
Waste such as unused chemicals, x-rays, single use steel surgical instruments, clean plastics and uncontaminated sterile wrap may be recyclable. Ideally separated at the source, these are taken to specialist recycling facilities where they are sterilised and then processed into new products.
Any other waste that cannot be safely recycled is taken to specialised medical waste treatment facilities where these materials are treated according to state and federal regulation, then safely disposed of at a suitably licensed landfill. The handling, transportation, processing and disposal of these materials is tightly regulated and licensed.
Regulations vary by state, and REMONDIS Vetra Health will advise you on what is required.
