About us

First Nations engagement

Respect for First Nations peoples underpins the employment, operational and cultural practices of REMONDIS Australia.

REMONDIS Australia’s operations in Australia are conducted on and across the ancestral lands of Australia’s First Nations peoples. We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the lands on which our company is located and where we conduct our business.

We pay our respects to ancestors and Elders, past and present, and we strive to reflect this respect in our behaviour as a company, as an employer and as individuals.

REMONDIS Australia is committed to honouring Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ unique cultural and spiritual relationships to the land, waters and seas and their rich contribution to society.

Equal employment opportunity

REMONDIS is currently developing its first Reconciliation Action Plan, to be implemented in 2026.

REMONDIS proudly maintains an ‘EEO for Indigenous Australians Policy’ in support of engagement with First Nations people in the communities in which we operate across Australia and the provision of employment opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This Policy applies in conjunction with our ‘EEO Bullying, Harassment and Discrimination Policy’.

We naturally strive to ensure fair and equal opportunity for all First Nations people engaged in our workforces.

REMONDIS Australia’s approximately 1,200 employees includes Indigenous Australians. The rates of Indigenous employment varies from state to state; an in-depth evaluation is being conducted in support of our Indigenous Employment Policy.

Local insight, local partnerships

REMONDIS aims to reach out to First Nations communities in the regions in which we operate to foster relationships that yield valued and valuable opportunities for employment and business ventures, with the support of community elders.

We seek to engage Indigenous-owned businesses, as defined by Supply Nation, and welcome the partnerships this approach brings, such as our joint venture with Indigenous-owned industrial service provider, JAI-MEC, to form Red Earth Industrial Services.

Red Earth Industrial Services

In April 2021, REMONDIS Australia and JAI-MEC Rural Contracting entered into a 50:50 joint venture to launch Red Earth Industrial Services. The new venture provides twice-weekly domestic waste collections for nearly 3,500 residents in Weipa, Napranum and Mapoon in the Cape York Peninsula in far north Queensland.

The plan is for Red Earth to flourish into a diversified industrial business, offering a variety of additional services across the remote Peninsula – which may include sand blasting, painting and electrical work.

Torres Strait Islander descendent, diesel mechanic and Weipa local Sandra Kirk – who owns and runs JAI-MEC with her husband Jai Christie – said Indigenous employment would be foremost in mind.

“We’ve got a big opportunity to create new jobs and we’ll be looking at opportunities for local Indigenous people wherever possible,” Mrs Kirk said.

“Creating and keeping jobs in local communities is so important, given how remote we are. The sky could be the limit in terms of business growth as time progresses,” added Mrs Kirk.
