Polystyrene recycling and the circular economy

From our resource recovery facility at Wingfield, South Australia, we receive and process expanded polystyrene (EPS) into a valuable recovered resource. Our processing line, one of very few such facilities in Australia, diverts this bulky packaging waste from landfill and enables its re-entry into the circular economy.

REMONDIS also welcomes members of the public to drop off their own EPS at our Wingfield Resource Recovery Facility – we welcome passionate recyclers and encourage them to share the word to others.

How polystyrene recycling works

What do you need to know about polystyrene recycling?

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is a lightweight, rigid cellular plastic used widely in packaging to protect items. Due to its shock-absorbing characteristics, it is helpful for storing and transporting fragile and expensive items such as electronic equipment, chemicals and wines.

While EPS is a type of plastic made from oil, 98% of the material is air. Oil is a non-renewable resource, making it an ideal target for recovery and return into the circular economy.

How does it work?

At our custom-built facility at Wingfield SA, polystyrene is recycled through granulation and is then stored in a hopper before being compacted. The compacted EPS is then melted, cooled in a water bath and then pelletised and converted into General Purpose Polystyrene (GPPS), sold to manufacturers via our Commodity Trading Desk. As GPPS, polystyrene waste can now be turned into new products including outdoor furniture, decking, picture frames and skirting boards.
