MEDIA RELEASE

The Wingfield team have designed and delivered custom-fabricated waste solutions to protect workers on the River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project, South Australia's largest-ever road infrastructure build.

We just entered this project into the national Waste Innovation & Recycling Awards. When you read this summary, you'll understand why.

Purpose-built waste infrastructure for the T2D Project

When the River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project – the final missing link in Adelaide's North-South Corridor – needed a safe way to dispose of hazardous silica dust, standard bins were not good enough. REMONDIS Wingfield's answer was to design and fabricate a family of 28 custom waste assets across five engineered designs, in-house in South Australia, each built around a specific site hazard.

The T2D Project is a $15.4 billion joint initiative of the Australian and South Australian Governments, delivering 10.5 kilometres of new motorway – more than half of it in twin tunnel systems – to complete 78 km of non-stop, traffic-light-free motorway between Gawler and Old Noarlunga. Construction supports around 5,500 jobs per year, with tunnelling generating significant volumes of rock, concrete and engineered-material waste streams, including respirable crystalline silica.

REMONDIS has been entrusted with responsibility for waste management across the T2D Project – supplying and servicing bins for waste streams generated across its multiple worksites.

The custom fabrications presented in this nomination sit on top of that full-service foundation: where a standard bin could do the job, we supplied it; where no bin on the market could, we built one.

The solutions were co-designed by the people closest to the risk – REMONDIS account management and fabrication teams working directly alongside the T2D site leadership: Michael Tulloch (Major Accounts Manager, REMONDIS), Paul Carpenter (Fabrication Team Lead, REMONDIS Wingfield), Matthew Draper (C&I Manager, REMONDIS Wingfield) and Frank Vucic (Senior Supervisor, T2D Project).

THE CHALLENGES:

  • Hazardous silica dust disposal. T2D sites generate significant volumes of silica dust. Open or standard-lidded skips risk wind dispersal of respirable particles and water ingress, turning every bin exchange into a potential exposure event for workers and surrounding communities.
  • Contaminated truck wash water. Washing down heavy vehicles on a tunnelling project produces contaminated wash water that must be captured, not released to ground or stormwater.
  • Ground contamination during IBC transfer. Loading material into Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs) without engineered containment leads to spillage, ground contamination and poor site housekeeping.
  • Spill response for heavy machinery. A tunnelling fleet of this scale needs spill response equipment positioned where the machines actually work, ready to deploy immediately.
  • Waste transfer from elevated work areas. Recovering waste safely from the Level 1 works to ground level, without manual carrying or uncontrolled dropping of material.

THE OPPORTUNITIES:

Rather than telling the client what could not be done with standard equipment, REMONDIS Wingfield treated each hazard as a design brief.

Our in-house fabrication team engineered, built, painted and delivered a fit-for-purpose asset for every problem.

We delivered 28 units across five designs: custom watertight-lidded 4 m³ silica dust skips, an IBC loading chute, truck wash containment tanks fabricated from repurposed shipping containers, dedicated spill kit skip bins, and waste chutes for safe recovery of waste from elevated levels.

TARGETS AND KPIs MET TO DATE:

  • From first conversation to delivered solution in 13 days. T2D first raised the silica dust challenge with REMONDIS on 16 January 2026; the first custom skip was designed, fabricated, painted and delivered on 29 January 2026. With the design proven, each additional lid now takes approximately 5 days to fabricate and paint.
  • 28 custom assets deployed across five designs:
    • Custom silica dust skips with enclosed weatherproof lid (9 units)
    • Waste chutes for elevated work areas (6 units)
    • Spill kit skip bins (10 units)
    • Truck wash containment tanks made from repurposed shipping containers (2 units)
    • IBC loading chute (1 unit)
  • Safe, compliant silica disposal operating. All 9 silica skips run with a lined-bin system and disposal via deep burial. The first controlled load – 2.38 tonnes of silica dust – was safely disposed on 27 April 2026, confirming the engineered pathway works end-to-end and replacing open bins and administrative controls with a higher-order engineering control.
  • EPA compliance maintained at the wheel wash. Two fabricated containment tanks feed a 25,000-litre holding tank collecting wheel wash liquid, keeping the project compliant with EPA regulations, with muddy water removed by liquid waste tanker under a regular IBC exchange service.
  • A closed service loop established. Spill kit skips are fully serviceable. Used units are taken to a wash plant for treatment and returned to duty rather than discarded.
  • Client brief answered in full. Every fabrication was developed with, and accepted by, T2D site leadership. The initial silica skip commission grew into a 28-asset engineered fleet, all fabricated at REMONDIS Wingfield by local trades: a replicable, cost-effective model any metro operator could adopt.
