REMONDIS Australia has consolidated its position as a waste management leader in Queensland by investing in an expansive multi-purpose waste processing hub and supporting infrastructure at its Rocklea Resource Recovery Facility.
Six years in the making, the development was officially opened today by Board Member REMONDIS Group and CEO REMONDIS International Group Egbert Tölle, REMONDIS Australia CEO and Managing Director Björn Becker, Queensland Shadow Minister for Health and local MP Mark Bailey, Brisbane City Councillor Tracy Davis and Waste Recycling Industry Queensland CEO Alison Price.
The two-hectare expansion within REMONDIS’s ten-hectare Rocklea site includes a 2,500 square metre building that centralises new medical, biosecurity and cardboard processing operations under one roof, along with a heavy-duty mechanical maintenance workshop. Adjacent drive routes and parking areas have been custom designed to speed up arrivals and departures.
The additions complement commercial and industrial waste transfer operations conducted at the site, which has been REMONDIS’s Queensland headquarters for more than 20 years. The new functions will service customers across South East Queensland.
Approximately 200,000 tonnes of waste was processed at the Rocklea site in 2025, which will increase with the new operations.
The medical and biosecurity processing operation is REMONDIS’s first in Queensland and comes as part of the company’s national push into the highly specialised waste management space. It has been delivered in response to private and public sector demand, given marketplace gaps that became particularly apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Under strict licence conditions, medical waste processing operations involve use of a US-made Bondtech autoclave to sterilise waste such as biosecurity material, syringes and surgical equipment for safe handling and disposal. Such waste will arrive from multiple customers including hospitals, nursing homes and medical and veterinary centres.
The medical waste operation is strategically important to REMONDIS and its customers, given that it is the only such facility located close to Brisbane’s CBD.
An advanced Godswill baler from Taiwan and associated equipment from Queensland-based Material Recovery Solutions are the cardboard processing centrepieces, allowing more than 20 tonnes of baling per hour. They eliminate the need for external involvement in this step of the recycling journey, enabling better efficiency and cost-competitiveness.
The maintenance workshop is unique because it provides a fully equipped in-house workplace for REMONDIS’s skilled heavy vehicle mechanics. This will contain operational costs and maximise running efficiency for 50 REMONDIS trucks operating from the site.
It’s expected that at least ten new jobs will be created as the new operations ramp up.
Björn Becker said REMONDIS had drawn on national and international expertise to deliver the facilities.
“Customers and the environment are always front and centre of mind when we invest in expansion,” Mr Becker said.
“We focus on how we can deliver the most reliable and efficient tailor-made solutions for customers, while keeping costs down.
“Every dollar invested in such projects is also a win for the environment because it extends our ability to process waste safely and responsibly.
“Leveraging our other successful projects around Australia and the world means we can deliver top-tier initiatives like this seamlessly.
“It’s significant that we’ve left scope for the new offerings to expand as we pick up new business and market demand continues to grow.”
Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) Brisbane, a 24/7 emergency and specialist hospital, is a key client relying on REMONDIS’s clinical waste services. Another is Animal Welfare League Queensland (AWLQ), which operates from seven South East Queensland sites. REMONDIS’s brief includes regular collections from both organisations.
“A streamlined and cost-effective means of managing clinical waste is essential to our function of saving animals’ lives,” AWLQ Head of Property Operations Steve Dignam said.
“Time and money saved on this front is time and money directed to caring for animals.
“Through its Rocklea facility and broader operations, REMONDIS is able to tailor-make specialised services and solutions that match our needs.”
DSD Group was engaged for the expansion’s design, construction and civil works. More than 20 other consultants, contractors and equipment suppliers were engaged to complete the project overall.
