Trinity College has set itself an aspirational goal of 100% diversion from landfill, as part of the College's Environmental Sustainability Plan. That's the kind of ambition we love to support.
Building on the College's existing recycling program, REMONDIS helped design and implement a simple, intuitive system enabling consistent waste separation across five campuses.
With a keen team of junior recycling champions, the College is driving long-term behavioural change by embedding sustainability into everyday school operations and learning. Nice one, Trinity!
CASE STUDY
At Trinity College in South Australia, sustainability is part of everyday learning. From preschool through to senior school, students are encouraged to make environmentally responsible choices – both in the classroom and around campus.
In 2025, the College set a clear goal: improve waste diversion from landfill across its campuses. Working together, REMONDIS and Trinity College developed a practical, easy-to-use waste solution designed specifically for a school environment – one that supports both operational outcomes and student learning.
The challenge
Schools produce a unique mix of waste, from lunch packaging and food scraps to classroom paper, cardboard, and outdoor materials. Trinity College wanted a system that could handle this variety while remaining simple enough for students of all ages to use correctly.
Consistency was also important. With multiple campuses and year levels, the College needed a waste solution that would work across the entire school community while supporting its broader sustainability goals.
As a new partnership, the project began with consultation and collaboration. By working closely with Trinity’s leadership and facilities teams, REMONDIS gained a clear understanding of how waste was generated across the College – and how a better system could support both environmental outcomes and student behaviour.
The REMONDIS solution
Together, REMONDIS and Trinity College designed a customised waste management system tailored specifically to ʻschool wasteʼ.
At the centre of the solution is a clear and engaging bin labelling system that makes waste separation simple and intuitive for students and staff.
The labels guide users to separate materials into four streams:
The rollout was delivered in stages to ensure a smooth transition. Back-of-house bins were installed in September 2025, followed by front-of-house aesthetic systems introduced in Term 1 2026, ready for the new school year.
The program now operates across six campuses (with five active service sites), creating a consistent approach to waste management across the College.
The project also brought together several REMONDIS teams, including the Marketing team which helped design the customised labels, and pricing partners who supported sticker production.
The result is a system that is practical, educational, and aligned with Trinity College’s identity and sustainability ambitions.
The result
Since the rollout began, the program has delivered strong environmental and operational results for Trinity College.
One of the most important outcomes is that general student waste is now diverted from landfill. The small amount of remaining landfill material mainly comes from construction waste or packaging poly generated during facility yard operations – a major shift from traditional school waste profiles.
Just as importantly, the initiative is helping build everyday sustainability habits across the school community. Thousands of students and staff are now actively participating in better waste practices, supported by a system designed specifically for how schools operate.
By investing in a tailored waste solution, Trinity College is reinforcing sustainability as a lived value – helping students understand their role in protecting the environment, both now and in the future. For REMONDIS, the project shows the value of listening, collaborating, and delivering solutions that work in the real world.
Q&A with Mark Dorian from Trinity College
Mark Dorian, Director of Facilities at Trinity College: The project was initiated as a result of a successful tender submission from REMONDIS, and deploying the alternate waste processing option(s) as part of that tender. The submission provided a pathway to examine alternatives, and assist in delivering the College’s aspirational goal of 100% diversion from landfill, as part of our Environmental Sustainability Plan.
Although an established and successful recycling program was already in place at Trinity, the new ResourceCo/Jefferies processing options allowed us to re-examine how we collected and improved our waste collection and management.
We took a ‘two tier’ approach to rolling out the changes, with back of house sorting/collection implemented immediately. This allowed us to ensure all processes were fully developed and in place when we went ‘live’ with the front of house roll-out.
It also provided us time to work through a thorough roll-out strategy that included auditing our current bin types and locations, developing specific bin signage with school-appropriate pictorials and layout, a full communication strategy with instructional videos using Trinity students supporting written communication, and ensuring the roll-out was timed appropriately.
There were a number of successes with this roll-out, including:
Looking forward to the ongoing reporting of landfill diversion rates and waste stream data to openly publish and use within the curriculum, to showcase the success of the program and support our ongoing commitment to sustainability.
