Opportunities and challenges for sustainability in healthcare waste management

REMONDIS supports healthcare clients to manage clinical and medical wastes safely and sustainably, while navigating complex clinical waste regulations

COMMENTARY

REMONDIS Australia's medical and clinical waste management specialist, Mike Arnold, recently joined a panel discussing sustainability in healthcare waste management, organised by the German-Australian Chamber of Commerce with the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). Here's a summary of Mike's contribution to that conversation.

_

A study conducted by the University of Sydney found that the healthcare sector is responsible for approximately 7% of Australia’s total carbon footprint. While this figure may not seem particularly large at first glance, it is in fact double the emissions attributed to the aviation industry — highlighting the urgent need for more sustainable practices in healthcare, especially when it comes to managing hospital and laboratory waste.

Implementing these sustainable practices falls primarily on the healthcare institutions themselves. However, companies like REMONDIS play a crucial role in supporting this transition by providing the tools, systems, and expertise needed to reduce waste and manage what remains in a safe, efficient, and fully compliant manner.

As a global leader in the circular economy, REMONDIS offers tailored waste management solutions specifically designed for the healthcare sector, including:

Segregation support: Assisting facilities with clear and compliant waste segregation processes to minimise contamination and enhance recyclability.

Secure collection and transport: Providing specialised containers and trained professionals to safely handle infectious, pharmaceutical, and other sensitive waste streams.

Treatment and disposal: Operating certified treatment facilities to neutralise hazardous clinical waste and ensure environmentally responsible disposal.

Sustainability reporting: Delivering detailed waste tracking and reporting to help meet environmental targets and fulfill regulatory requirements.

Continuous education: Offering training and consulting to keep healthcare staff informed on best practices and evolving compliance standards.

By partnering with REMONDIS, healthcare facilities can concentrate on their core mission — delivering essential and high-quality healthcare — while trusting that REMONDIS is supporting them in achieving their ambitious sustainability objectives.

Improved environmental sustainability starts at the source

Hospitals and research institutions can significantly improve their environmental performance by optimising the separation, treatment, and recycling of hazardous and non-hazardous waste streams — and REMONDIS is well-positioned to support them at every step of this journey.

The most impactful step in waste management is correct segregation at the point of generation. This means distinguishing clearly between:

  • Clinical/infectious waste, which requires specialized handling and disposal;
  • Non-hazardous general waste, which may be recyclable;
  • Sharps, pharmaceuticals, and cytotoxic materials, which demand strict regulatory compliance.

REMONDIS assists by:

  • Conducting on-site audits to identify improvement potential;
  • Delivering color-coded, compliant containers to support correct waste segregation;
  • Providing staff training and awareness campaigns to embed best practices in daily routines.

REMONDIS operates certified facilities that offer secure treatment and disposal fully compliant with legislation and best practices. We also handle documentation and regulatory reporting, ensuring full compliance with national and international standards.

Much of the waste currently treated as clinical could be diverted from high-impact disposal pathways if sorted correctly. REMONDIS helps recover materials such as:

  • Plastics, cardboard, and metals from clean zones
  • Electronic waste and batteries from laboratories
  • Recyclable packaging from medical supplies

Through our circular economy infrastructure, we ensure that non-hazardous materials are reintegrated into the value chain wherever possible.

Regulatory frameworks in Australia both support and, at times, hinder sustainable clinical waste practices — especially for hospitals, laboratories, and waste management providers like REMONDIS.

Supportive aspects of the regulatory framework

  • Clear classification and handling standards: National and state-level regulations — such as those under the National Environment Protection Measures (NEPM) and EPA guidelines — establish strict standards for handling, storing, transporting, and treating clinical waste. This clarity promotes safety, consistency, and accountability.
  • Licensing and compliance: Licensed operators like REMONDIS are authorised under EPA frameworks to process clinical waste, ensuring high environmental and safety standards.
  • Hazardous waste tracking: Digital tracking systems improve transparency and compliance, reducing the risk of illegal dumping or mishandling. They also offer data insights that can help hospitals identify areas for waste reduction.
  • Sustainability policy alignment: Broader state and federal sustainability goals — like Australia's National Waste Policy and circular economy strategies — are pushing healthcare systems to adopt greener practices. These provide direction and justification for reducing clinical waste volumes.

Barriers and challenges in the current system

  • Overclassification of waste: One of the biggest barriers is the tendency to classify large volumes of non-contaminated materials (like packaging or unused supplies) as clinical waste. This leads to overuse of high-impact disposal methods like incineration and sterilisation, even when unnecessary.
  • Lack of incentives for source separation: Regulations focus more on end-of-life compliance than upstream waste prevention or separation. Facilities are not always incentivised — financially or operationally — to implement sorting systems that distinguish recyclable from clinical waste.
  • Fragmented state-by-state rules: Australia's regulatory environment varies significantly by state and territory. This makes it challenging for national providers like REMONDIS and for healthcare networks operating across jurisdictions to implement unified, scalable solutions.
  • Limited approval for emerging technologies: Innovative treatment technologies (e.g., microwave disinfection) often face long approval processes, slowing their adoption even when they offer superior environmental outcomes.

_

As a certified waste management provider, REMONDIS works closely with regulators, hospitals, and laboratories to:

  • Support proper classification and segregation at the source
  • Design compliant yet sustainable workflows
  • Advocate for clearer, harmonised standards across jurisdictions
  • Pilot new technologies and systems in line with evolving regulations

By bridging the gap between compliance and innovation, REMONDIS helps ensure that clinical waste is managed safely and sustainably — within the limits of today’s framework, and with an eye on shaping better policy for tomorrow.
