How our medical and clinical waste service works

REMONDIS's clinical and medical service streamlines waste management for medical and related businesses of all kinds and sizes. Here's our approach:

Questions about medical waste management?

What do you need to know about clinical and medical waste?

Medical waste is generated by medical or healthcare professionals including hospitals, medical centres, dentists, pharmacies, veterinary hospitals, aged care facilities and research and pathology facilities.

Materials include needles and sharps, human or animal tissues, body fluids, bandages, instruments, samples, bloods, medical devices and radioactive medical waste.

All these are materials that pose significant health, safety or environmental risks when disposed of improperly and so require specific reporting and transport requirements for compliant disposal. Medical waste streams typically can’t be sent straight to conventional landfill; these include substances defined under the Australian Code for the Transport of Dangerous Goods. These waste streams must be pre-treated to a level that satisfies the Waste Classification Guidelines. Each material must be assessed in order to be collected, processed and disposed of properly, in accordance with relevant regulations.

Common medical waste types include:

  • Clinical or biohazardous waste
  • Cytotoxic waste
  • Pharmaceutical waste
  • Anatomical waste
  • Sanitary waste
  • Laboratory waste
  • X-rays
  • Amalgam
What do you need to know about laboratory waste?

Laboratory waste is any chemical or hazardous waste generated in laboratories. It may be generated by medical or research professionals including at research and pathology facilities, schools and universities.

Materials include chemicals such as acids, alkalis, pharmaceuticals, poisons and toxins, but also includes bio-waste samples including human or animal tissues, body fluids, bloods and samples. All these are materials that pose significant health, safety or environmental risks when disposed of improperly and so require specific reporting and transport requirements for compliant disposal.

Laboratory waste streams typically can’t be sent straight to conventional landfill; these include substances defined under the Australian Code for the Transport of Dangerous Goods. These waste streams must be pre-treated to a level that satisfies the Waste Classification Guidelines. Each material must be assessed in order to be collected, processed and disposed of properly, in accordance with relevant regulations.

What happens to your waste?

Waste such as unused chemicals, x-rays, single use steel surgical instruments, clean plastics and uncontaminated sterile wrap may be recyclable. Ideally separated at the source, these are taken to specialist recycling facilities where they are sterilised and then processed into new products.

Any other waste that cannot be safely recycled is taken to specialised medical waste treatment facilities, including our own specialised autoclave at REMONDIS Wingfield, where these materials are treated according to state and federal regulation, then safely disposed of at a suitably licensed landfill. The handling, transportation, processing and disposal of these materials is tightly regulated and licensed.

Regulations vary by state, and REMONDIS will advise you on what is required.

As a guide, in Queensland:

  • Chemical waste may be incinerated at licensed facilities
  • Cytotoxic waste may be incinerated
  • Anatomical waste may be incinerated or treated using chemical disinfection using peroxide, lime and shredding
  • Pharmaceutical waste may be incinerated
  • Treated clinical waste (for example, having been treated in an autoclave) may be compacted and disposed to landfill
  • Untreated clinical waste may be processed by incineration, autoclave then shredding, chemical disinfection using hypochlorite and shredding, chemical disinfection using peroxide, lime and shredding, microwave and shredding, then compaction and landfill at licensed facilities
