MEDIA RELEASE

REMONDIS Australia and The Hospital Research Foundation Group in Western Australia have launched a unique statewide beverage container recycling initiative structured to raise funds for critical medical research and support.

An extension of REMONDIS’s long-term participation in the WA Container Deposit Scheme, Containers for Change WA, the initiative sees REMONDIS provide its commercial customers with container-only recycling bins where soft drink cans, beer, wine, waterbottles and juice cartons can be deposited, raising 10 cents per eligible container.

Such containers have been traditionally placed in worksite co-mingled recycling bins or landfill bins.

Participating REMONDIS customers still receive recycling and general waste bins in addition to these container-only bins, ensuring comprehensive waste management needs are met.

REMONDIS has already placed 30 container-only bins with commercial customers and commenced channelling funds from the recycling process to The Hospital Research Foundation Group. Each eligible container is worth 10 cents, so the donations add up fast.

REMONDIS intends on placing container-only bins across many more commercial sites, with a goal of raising $100,000 annually.

Coordinated by Western Australia Return Recycle Renew Ltd (WARRRL), Containers for Change ensures that 10 cents is paid for each accepted container collected and recycled.

REMONDIS Project Manager Greg Richardson said the initiative was simple but incredibly effective.

“We’ve spent a couple of years developing this behind the scenes, and it’s now paying off,” Greg said.

“It provides our clients with an extra waste management solution that has no operational risk, maintains the right data reporting and enables the support of a worthy cause.

“Pretty much everything is arranged by REMONDIS, ensuring that all cash returns end up with The Hospital Research Foundation Group.

“The take-up has been extremely positive, a reflection of businesses striving to boost their green and philanthropic credentials.

Ben Wilson, Growth and Impact Lead at The Hospital Research Foundation Group, said the initiative would create meaningful benefits in Western Australian communities.

“This partnership is exciting for many reasons,” Ben said.

“We’re privileged to have partners such as REMONDIS who thrive in maximising environmental and social outcomes.

“The funds raised will support a range of unmet needs in Western Australia, including medical research, health and wellbeing programs in local hospitals and initiatives that assist vulnerable people in our society.

“It’s uplifting that so many people are getting on board by simply recycling containers and collectively benefitting the health and wellbeing of the community.

“We can’t wait to share the incredible stories that will emerge from this funding.”

One REMONDIS customer that has signed to the scheme is Transdev.

“Joining this initiative was an easy decision,” Transdev Western Australia Health, Safety, Environment and Quality advisor Jasmine Pacini said.

“It helps us improve recycling outcomes while supporting vital medical research and community health programs across Western Australia.”

REMONDIS has been involved with Containers for Change WA since its inception in 2020, handling nearly half of all items collected under the scheme.

“REMONDIS alone has handled 2.6 billion containers under the scheme so far,” Greg Richardson added.

“If those containers were stacked end-to-end, they’d reach the moon.

“Every container captured for recycling is one less container going to landfill.”
